This is how Apple's new HomeKit home automation system with work!

HomeKit is coming to the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad next month as part of iOS 8. It’s a home automation framework Apple is providing to developers and manufacturers so that they can make all their apps and accessories work together in a consistent, convenient way. With HomeKit, you’ll be able to set up homes and rooms, fill rooms with accessories, and set up actions and triggers, and control is all via Siri, Apple’s personal virtual assistant. Say “Night, Siri!” and your garage door will close, your front door will lock, your night lights will come on, your TV will turn to the white noise channel, and your thermostat will turn down the temperature, and your dishwasher will turn on. So how does it all work?

As luck would have it, I’ve spent the last few hours explaining it in depth over at iMore. It does look a little complex, and a lot of it will depend on how much and how well developers and manufacturers implement it. But, Apple has a way of pushing technology forward and more connected homes for more people is more better. Go check out the post and then come back here and let me know what you think of HomeKit and which accessories you want made compatible with it first!
